An ordinance in Springfield banning the sale of cats, dogs, and rabbits within the city has gained traction and is on its way to the desk of Mayor Domenic Sarno for approval.
The bill was passed unanimously by the Springfield City Council.
City Council members who support the ordinance have said that the proposal would help put an end to the “puppy mill pipeline” in pet stores.
If approved, the ordinance will affect both current and future pet stores. Rather than sell the pets, businesses will instead have to adjust their business to an adopt a rescue model. Pet stores violating the order will face fines up to $300.
